Regional Summit: Sustainable Investing in Social Sciences for an Inclusive and Resilient Indo-Pacific

The 2025 Regional Funding Summit on Social Science Funding in the Indo-Pacific will be held on 21 & 22 August 2025 in Surabaya, Indonesia.

This high-level gathering will bring together representatives and leaders in social sciences, research funding, policy and practice from across the Indo-Pacific region.

This upcoming summit builds on the success of the 2024 Regional Funding Summit held in Bangkok, which brought together 90+ leaders from over 20 countries to shape the Indo-Pacific social science agenda.

The Surabaya summit is part of the 2023-2026 Boosting Social Sciences and Their Contribution to Better Lives in the Indo-Pacific initiative, launched by AASSREC with support from IDRC and partners.

2024 Regional Summit, Bangkok

 

The summit will address five interconnected priorities:

  1. Translate research and assessment findings from the 2024 Regional Funding Summit into long-term funding mechanisms tailored for the Indo-Pacific region.
  2. Design sustainable and efficient co-funding and governance models that emphasise regional leadership and ownership.
  3. Secure financial and institutional commitments to support long-term investment in research infrastructure, competitive grants, and training systems across the region.
  4. Amplify the voice of regional social science institutions in broader policy debates and international forums.
  5. Engage new partners and stakeholders to strengthen collaborative efforts for social science development in the Indo-Pacific.

  • International and regional non-governmental organisations
  • Regional and international funding institutions
  • Government representatives and policymakers committed to evidence-informed governance

Note: Participation is by invitation only with identified organisations invited to nominate representatives to attend. AASSREC also welcomes suggestions for other invitees with an interest in social science research funding in the Indo-Pacific region.

Participants whose attendance is confirmed will be invited to complete a registration form, which will be sent by email from the AASSREC’s secretariat.
