The Indonesian Institute of Sciences (Lembaga Ilmu Pengetahuan Indonesia – LIPI) is a governmental institution for science and research authority in Indonesia. LIPI has the vision to be a world-class research institution by using science to improve national competitiveness.

LIPI has missions to:

  1. Create inventions of science to encourage innovation to improve the competitiveness of national economies,
  2. Develop useful knowledge for the conservation and sustainable utilization of resources;
  3. Increase international recognition in the field of science; and
  4. Improve the quality of Indonesian human resources through scientific activity.

Under the coordination of the Chairman, LIPI conducts research and innovation in the fields of Life Sciences, Earth Sciences, Engineering Sciences, Social and Humanities Sciences, and Scientific Services through 32 research centers. LIPI has a pivotal role in providing scientific recommendations to government regulations and policies related to economic, political, social and cultural aspects. LIPI has produced qualified research results that are beneficial to the society, including Biodiversity, Environment and Maritime; Food Security, Agriculture and Farm; Health and Pharmacy; Advanced Material; Energy; Technology, Information and Communication; Social Dynamics, Humanity and Culture; Technology Innovation and Utilization of Science and Technology, as well as Scientific Services.
