About:

In 1959, the National Research Council of Thailand (NRCT) was established as a government organization equivalent to a department, functioning as the main national agency responsible for research policy and research promotion in all areas of natural sciences, social sciences, arts and humanities.  It reported directly to the Prime Minister.

Later, in 2019, there was a reform of Thailand’s research system and the new “Ministry of Higher Education, Science, Research and Innovation (MHESRI)” was established, which combined and realigned four major components; namely, the Ministry of Science and Technology (MOST), Office of Higher Education Commission (OHEC), Thailand Research Fund (TRF) and NRCT. This integrates higher education, universities, national laboratories, national policy bodies and funding agencies under one umbrella to encourage balanced and comprehensive research, science, technology and innovation support including social sciences and humanities.

Therefore, effective on May 2, 2019 onwards by the Act of Ministries, Bureaus, and Departments Improvement (No. 19), 2562 B.E. (2019), NRCT was transformed into the main national funding agency for research and innovation in all fields of natural and social sciences and humanities under MHESRI, administrated by Executive Director.  NRCT also covers other key missions: (1) initiating and managing national key research and innovation programs;  (2) managing national databases and indicators on science, research and innovation; (3) formulating and managing national research standards and ethical conducts on research; (4) disseminating and transferring research knowledge to relevant stakeholders for commercial, social, and economical benefits; (5) supporting development of human resource on research and innovation; and (6) providing awards and recognition of research and innovation.

To support participation of Thai researchers in an international contact for human resource development, NRCT is actively involved in international collaboration by maintaining relations with foreign research funding partners all over the world.  In terms of international strategy, NRCT is also represented in various bodies at a regional and international level.
